Guide to AI: Myth busting

Checking the facts…

Artificial intelligence is often talked about as if it were neutral or objective, but in reality it reflects the social norms, biases, and power structures of the world in which it is built. When it comes to gender, this can lead to harmful misconceptions, such as the idea that AI treats everyone equally, or that its mistakes are just “technical glitches.” On this page, we unpack some of the most common misunderstandings about AI and gender, and explain why it matters especially for young women navigating an increasingly digital world.

image says: Error: 'there's nothing we can do against this'. Fact: 'sexual digital forgeries can be regulated with strong policy + accountability for tech companies.'

Sexual Digital Forgeries can be regulated with the right policy and by ensuring accountability from policymakers and tech corporations alike.

image says: error: 'just don't post nudes'. Fact: 'this blames victims. responsibility lies with perpetrators commiting the crime.'

Sentiments like “just dont post nudes” are counter-productive. Thinking this way places the responsibility of the crime committed on the victim’s shoulders, instead of blaming the perpetrator for engaging in a criminal offence.

images says: Error 'deepfakes are funny!'. Fact: '96% of deepfakes are intimate image abuse targeting women and girls'.

96% of all deepfakes are intimate image abuse directly targeting women and girls.

image says: Error: 'AI girlfriends are therapy'. Fact: 'This ideology has a societal impact on how women are treated and continuously dehumanised.'

AI girlfriends are not a form of therapy. This ideology has a societal impact on how women are treated and continuously dehumanised.

image says: Error 'AI makes nudes from nothing, so I'm not harming anyone'. Fact: 'AI models are trained on non-consensual data, often stolen without knowledge or consent.'

AI can’t generate nudes for you from nothing. AI models are created through Machine Learning often trained on non-consentual data, without the owner’s knowledge and informed consent.

image says Error: 'It's just memes!'. Facts: 'Even 'innocent' AI images train tech that drains resources and fuels harmful biases.'

While these memes and images may seem harmless, the technology is still fueled by harmful biases and draining natural resources.
