Sofia is a museum and cultural worker, working with cultural organisations across Glasgow. She is passionate about widening access to arts and cultural spaces through creating inclusive spaces for marginalised peoples and communities in Glasgow. Her work places a particular focus on Anti-Racist action, through collective care, community organising, and liberation for all.
She is interested in looking at how to enrich museum experiences by engaging with social, political, and environmental concerns, looking at how audiences can be engaged through diverse and accessible museum experiences and how values-driven museums can reflect their politics in physical spaces.
In her role as a museum worker, Sofia has advocated for tangible change within the museum sector. She has pushed for improved reporting mechanisms, Anti-Racism Training, and a genuine commitment to change. Further to this, Sofia has been looking at the importance of creating and curating Global Majority-led spaces, imagining what these spaces could look like, and how they would function. Sofia contributed to research highlighting the importance of investing in these spaces, and with the hope that this will lay the foundations for promoting tangible change.
In addition, Sofia is a mentor of the Delivering Change: Leadership Programme which is a reciprocal mentorship and training programme, pairing people with lived experience of systemic exclusion with someone who is a leader within the museum sector. As part of this, she supports her mentee to embed anti-oppression practice in their work, knowledge share, and discuss better practice within the museum sector. During a time when marginalised voices are being suppressed and ignored, this programme is crucial in supporting and amplifying lived experience-led voices.
Sofia brings her self-directed Anti-Oppressive work to Scotland’s cultural sector, grounding her work in her lived experience. In essence, Sofia seeks to better understand the challenges faced by people from the Global Majority working within the museum and culture sector, bringing a meaningful and thoughtful approach to accessibility, inclusion, and care.
