Pronouns: she/her

A young woman smiles at the camera, against the backdrop of a mountain. She has short brown hair and is wearing a tie-dyed t-shirt.

Betty is a committed advocate for inclusion and equal access to outdoor sports, where many people face significant barriers to access. She volunteers with climbing charity Urban Uprising, providing support and mentorship to young people as they learn to climb, helping them develop climbing skills as well as the life skills that go along with it, like self-confidence and resilience.

Betty is also co-founder and secretary of Grunnd Club, a climbing club for cis and trans women and non-binary people. This club provides a space for beginners and seasoned climbers alike from across Scotland, building community and providing a safe and supportive environment in which to learn new skills and take on challenges. In this role she organises trips and courses across Scotland and has helped build a membership of over 45 in a year.

Having grown up on an island, she believes intersectional thinking in Scotland must include a rural and island dimension. Betty is a long-time board member of Women’s Aid Orkney, providing strategic direction and support. In this role she has brought together gender-based violence organisations working across the North Isles to learn from each other. She is building a network with the aim of better platforming the challenges facing these kinds of services operating in an island context at the level of national decision making. Betty is passionate about democratic wellbeing and is working to build capacity in rural and island community organisations to engage with political institutions.
