EmBody to EmPower
A resource for young women about accessing healthcare in Scotland
- Health
- Rights
- Toolkit
From registering with a medical centre, doctor, or dentist, to making appointments, to talking to healthcare practitioners and having treatments, accessing healthcare is a journey.
The EmBody to EmPower project consists of a group of young women who co-designed three digital and physical resources to help create a more inclusive understanding of what a positive experience of accessing healthcare is, and how young women can build the skills and confidence to self-advocate within healthcare settings. Access the resources via the links below!
How did the project start?
The Status of Young Women in Scotland (SYWS 22-23) report focused on young women’s experiences of accessing healthcare. It highlighted young women’s experiences throughout the journey of accessing healthcare and what changes need to be made to ensure they can access the healthcare that they need and deserve.
Based on the research, we facilitated the EmBody to EmPower project with fourteen young women and co-designed resources to help create a more inclusive understanding of what a positive experience of accessing healthcare is, and how young women can build the skills and confidence to self-advocate within healthcare settings.
What are the resources?
The EmBody to EmPower resources consist of stickers, a folded A4 leaflet, and a longer digital document. All resources consider colour and font choice + size to ensure they are accessible to any reader who may pick them up.
The resources contain information about knowing your body, accessing healthcare, preparing for your appointment, and what a positive experience of accessing healthcare can be like. It also includes guidance about how to push for the healthcare you deserve when you are still not feeling right, support information, plus further reading, resources, and signposting.
Who was involved?
This resource was created by a group of young women aged 16-30 living across Scotland, facilitated by The Young Women’s Movement and creative consultant, Zoë Paterson. The project has been funded by The Princes Trust. Design and Illustrations are by Zoë Paterson.
Can I order physical copies of the resources?
Yes! We are aiming for the EmBody to EmPower resources to reach as many young women across Scotland as possible. You can order physical copies of the sticker and A4 folded leaflet for yourself, your organisation, or your service via the link below. We will be printing the resources on demand, so it may take up to a month to receive the order after you’ve placed it.
