Malini Chakrabarty is an award-winning multidisciplinary storyteller based in Glasgow, Scotland. Working across film, illustration, design and poetry, Malini creates work rooted in radical empathy and decolonial storytelling, made in genuine partnership with the communities at its heart.
Her film Ghor won Best International Indie Film at the Tokyo International Short Film Festival, and her artwork The Spectator was a finalist for the Amhurst Emerging Artist Award 2021. As founder of Art of Birdie Studio, Malini has worked with some of Scotland’s leading cultural organisations. Her current exhibition, Reclaiming Our Power, is a collaboration with the Mental Health Foundation at the Gallery of Modern Art. Led by the community and by people with lived experience, it helps racialised people process the trauma of racist microaggressions through artmaking.
Her previous work includes designing Traces of Empire for Historic Environment Scotland, a nationally touring exhibition about colonial histories shown at Glasgow Cathedral, Blackness Castle and Stanley Mills. Words of the Wild, for the Scottish Wildlife Trust, links ecology and community voice and has been exhibited at the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival. She illustrated the South Asian Stories Trail at the National Museum of Scotland, which reaches over two million visitors a year. At the Gallery of Modern Art, she created the Make Your Own Anti-Racist Card Game for children and illustrated the GoMA and Surroundings Decolonial Trail. She also created the cover artwork for Building a Feminist Nation.
Her collaborative work on the Lascar Research Project won the Museums Change Lives Award 2023. Undivided Identities was a finalist for Best International Use of Digital at the Museums + Heritage Awards and is now used as an educational resource around the world.
Malini is an Advisory Board Member for Refugee Festival Scotland and Healing Arts Scotland and a Trustee of Creative Glasgow. In 2025, she was appointed a UNESCO RIELA Affiliate Artist, recognising a practice that sits where art, justice and care meet. She is
currently training as an anti-oppressive psychotherapist, deepening her commitment to healing and care in her creative work.
