Mairi Millar is the member of the Scottish Youth parliament for Angus North and Mearns, and a History and Anthropology student at the University of Aberdeen.
In partnership with a fellow MSYP, Mairi has created, designed and delivered a successful campaign called PADS (Providing Access and Dismantling Stigma) to raise awareness of the gaps in the delivery of the 2021 Free period products (Scotland provision), as often they have found that schools and education facilities do not make period products easily accessible for those that need them. This included launching an online photo campaign to showcase examples of best practice on accessible period products in schools and examples of how schools should and could be doing better to remove the barriers and reduce the stigma of talking about menstrual health and support and writing and launching the ‘PADS’ report.
Since 2024 Mairi has chaired the Mearns Youth Forum, running and organising charity events, the first Aberdeenshire Youth election hustings events and exam support packs for school pupils.
Mairi is passionate about improving public transport in the Mearns area; she has worked closely with Aberdeenshire Council, transport companies and politicians on this issue. She was elected as deputy convenor of the Scottish Youth Parliament’s Transport, Environment and Rural Affairs committee in June 2026, where she advocates for improved and more affordable public transport, and climate awareness and action.
Throughout 2025, Mairi co-designed the Young Women and Democracy Summit in partnership with the Scottish Youth Parliament and the Young Women’s Movement to create a space for young people aged 16-30 to discuss how Parliament could and should be a place for young women to feel seen, heard and involved. Nearly 100 young women attended and took part in the summit in the Scottish Parliament. This would not have been possible without Mairi’s efforts, leadership and teamwork in bringing the event together.
Mairi’s energy and dedication to creating change is an inspiration to all of us.
