Lauren Mitchell

Location: Aberdeen

Lauren is currently one half of ‘Lauren and Jeff in the Morning’Northsound1’s weekly breakfast show. Lauren joined Northsound1 four years ago after winning a position through a local talent competition. Since then she has become heavily involved in the station, helping to raise its platform to one of the most popular morning shows in the area.

Her dedication is shown in her love of the craft and while working with Northsound1, Lauren completed her Masters in Digital Marketing. She was encouraged by the team at Northsound to continue studying and successfully balanced her workload alongside this and graduated in with merit in 2019.

Keen to take on any challenge, Lauren walked fifty miles in twenty-four hours, raising money for charity and gave updates live on air. The enthusiasm from listeners and the community drives Lauren to get involved and in her spare time, she volunteers with Cash4Kids, helping disadvantaged children in local communities gain access to specialist equipment.

Lauren oozes positivity – her belief is that a positive attitude rubs off on other people. She believes this helps her as a host for a breakfast show because providing upbeat company for listeners in the morning could have a big impact on their day! She’s driven to progress in her career and amplify the voices of young women on the radio. As she progresses in her career, Lauren hopes to be part of the change in creating space for women in broadcast media and believes through hard work and determination, there is no doubt this will be possible.

While at university studying Community Education, I attended a Bridging Digital conference, part of the Erasmus Plus project, which addressed international delegates on community education practices in learning, teaching, and practice. I spoke mainly about using digital media and technology in youth work practices and how we use digital media as part of our assessments at university.

Also at university, I am currently creating a research proposal on Sexual Health and Young people. This will discuss pressing issues and young people’s challenges in accessing sexual health services. It aims to foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among partners and participants from different backgrounds to address young people’s challenges. Through a collective effort, I hope this creates a more inclusive society that prioritises sexual health awareness, social justice, and equality for all.
