Rhiannon works at The STAR Centre: Rape Crisis Ayrshire as a support worker, offering specialist therapeutic emotional support and psychosocial education to survivors of any type of sexual violence in a safe, non-judgemental space. The people Rhiannon supports often have harrowing stories and many challenges to overcome as they try to heal. Rhiannon is compassionate and empathetic and always provides a safe space for those people to share at their own pace.
Rhiannon always works with empowerment at the heart of her professional practice ensuring that her clients are offered choices and supported making their own decision, recognising that they are the experts in their own life. Rhiannon’s passion for supporting other people affected by GBV comes from both her professional career development and personal experiences.
As a survivor of GBV herself, she always knew that she wanted to work in a therapeutic and supportive role where she could help other survivors process their experiences safely, understand that what happened to them was not their fault, nor should they feel any shame with regards to their experience, and help them to reclaim their sense of empowerment. To some, this work can seem difficult but Rhiannon feels incredibly honoured to be able to build a trusting relationship with every client she supports; to be the person who listens without judgement and helps them to understand their emotions, experiences and responses are all valid. Her total passion for fighting against gender stereotypes and gender-based violence is genuinely inspirational.
