27-year-old Katrina is a PhD student at the Centre for Biophotonics at the University of Strathclyde. Her research involves imaging the pancreas to improve new treatments for type 1 diabetes. Katrina is passionate about diversity and inclusion in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and is outspoken about structural inequalities in academia. She is also a science journalist and former editor in chief of theGIST, a mulit-award-winning science website and magazine. Katrina has been shortlisted for several national writing awards, including the Max Perutz Science Writing Award and the Association of British Science Writers Student Science Journalist of the Year. This spring, she will spend 3 months producing articles, videos and podcasts for NASA.
