In December 2020, Chloe founded Tak A Stand as part of a university project. It evolved into a powerful digital platform on Instagram, providing a safe space for survivors in Orkney to anonymously share their experiences of sexual abuse and harassment in The Orkney Islands. The account quickly resonated with the community, amassing over 300 submissions and challenging the narrative that ‘it doesn’t happen here’.
Chloe wanted to shed light on the normalisation of sexual violence in The Orkney Islands, and that despite being named the ‘best place to live’ in the UK in 2019, it does happen here, and we need to speak about it.
Her work has had a profound impact on the Orkney community and beyond. By providing a platform for survivors to share their stories, she has successfully broken the silence surrounding sexual violence in rural areas. This has led to a noticeable increase in both the reporting of sexual violence and the number of survivors seeking support. Orkney Rape and Sexual Assault Service (ORSAS) has directly supported individuals who cited Tak A Stand, highlighting the project’s role as a vital catalyst for breaking the silence and encouraging survivors to seek help.
