Chiara Bullen is a third-year PhD researcher at the University of Stirling across the disciplines of Publishing Studies, Literature and Law.

Her work explores book publishers’ social responsibilities in the 21st century, looking at areas such as the implementation of the morality clause, the use of sensitivity readers, and inclusion across the book industry. Her research also asks: how do we interact with literature created by those accused of abusive and/or problematic behaviours? What about literature containing the prejudiced attitudes of its creators? What do book publishers do to address this?

She is also a creative writer with published short stories and poems, while her sci-fi and fantasy novels were selected for Creative Scotland’s ‘Our Voices’ programme in 2021, and longlisted for Penguin Random House’s ‘WriteNow’ scheme in 2020. In her spare time, she volunteers with charities The Brilliant Club and MCR Pathways who aim to lessen the inequality gap in children’s education. Chiara is also a freelance writer and is the editorial assistant for The Great Outdoors magazine.
