Location: Dunbar/Glasgow

Alice Murray co-founded the abortion-rights campaign ‘Back Off Scotland’ in 2020 after experiencing anti-abortion harassment first-hand when she had an abortion at 19.

Back Off Scotland has been lobbying the Scottish Government to implement 150-metre harassment-free ‘buffer zones’ around any clinic that offers abortion services in Scotland. In June 2022, Alice spoke at the emergency abortion summit and met with Nicola Sturgeon to discuss the issue. Alice has shared her story with news outlets such as the BBC, STV, The Guardian and The Herald, helping to break the stigma around abortion. The Scottish Government have pledged to implement buffer zones in their 2022 Programme for Government after it was lodged as a private member’s bill by Green MSP Gillian Mackay. Alice graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in Social Anthropology and has been working in politics for the past year. She is now completing a law conversion degree in Glasgow and hopes to use her law degree to improve abortion rights and services in the UK.
