Through working as a young female in STEM roles, Emma is passionate in recognising the importance of advocacy and developing the next generation of people working in STEM. As part of widening this participation, she strongly believes in the importance of having role models to help with mentorship and breaking down barriers.

After graduating with a degree in Business Analysis and undertaking a training bootcamp to learn software development, Emma realised that the path to a career in STEM isn’t linear. She has used this knowledge alongside her own passion of widening participation to promote careers in STEM to students all across the UK. She believes that it’s so important to show the younger generation, and especially young girls, that careers in STEM are for everyone and there’s no one path to getting into the field of STEM.

By working in partnership with TechSheCan and CodeClub, so far in 2024, Emma has delivered workshops and assemblies to over 400 primary and secondary school students across Scotland and England, showing that the students’ hobbies and passions can lead to a wide range of careers in STEM. Through this experience, she has built an ongoing relationship with her local primary school to deliver assemblies regularly for their students.

From a wider perspective, Emma champions the work of her company’s Gender Network, helping to advocate for gender equality and supporting the organisation in being a place where everyone can achieve their full potential, irrespective of gender. Emma supports in the HeForShe initiative within the Gender Network which is connected to the 2014 UN Women initiative of the same name. Alongside HeForShe, Emma is a trained #IAmRemarkable facilitator which empowers everyone to celebrate their achievements in the workplace and beyond.

Giving back to the community is a real driving force in Emma’s life and through these two voluntary activities, she hopes to become a role model for others.
