Brenna Jessie is a Scottish feminist activist campaigning and working on issues to do with gender, justice and media.

She was once called a ‘horrible elite’ by Rupert Murdoch, and as Brenna notes, ‘more accurately “pancake tits hippy dippy lesbian” by an anonymous man on Twitter; in fairness he was pretty much spot on (the anonymous man, not Murdoch).’

“I think my proudest achievement has to be leading a brilliant wee team to organise the first rally against the rape clause and two-child cap in Glasgow. We’ve organised several since, but there was something incredibly special about hundreds of people out on the streets angry about women’s lack of access to social security and the inhumanity of forcing a woman to prove her child was born of rape to receive Child Tax Credits. It went from a feeling of just anger, burning in my chest, to a huge public demonstration that brought the issue firmly into the public and political realm. One of the TV channels said it became an ‘election issue’ after the rally, that felt good.

It wasn’t just organising the rally – with a brilliant wee team – but the way we organised it. It was inclusive, accessible and diverse and people’s feedback was so lovely and supportive. We had a phenomenal line up – which included Alison Thewliss MP who has tenaciously campaigned on this issue – a huge turnout, amazing placards and people were angry and that is right, because where there is injustice we should be angry.

On a wee personal note, I also spoke at the rally (which completely terrifies me) to read a letter of support from the First Minister. That was a damn good day.”
